Understand the commonly used words and phrases

Below is a list of commonly used words and phrases, together with a summary of their meanings.

Application ID: used in conjunction with your Personal ID to identify uniquely your application to a particular programme or institution.

Apply: the online application system for applying for higher education programmes. Apply and its supporting information can be accessed in a separate window here.

Conditional offer: an offer made by a university or college, whereby you must fulfil certain criteria before you can be accepted on the programme you have applied for.postgraduate student at computer

Confirmation: when conditional offers that you have accepted become unconditional (because you now fulfil the conditions) or are declined.

Deferral: holding an offer until the following year.

Draft applications: applications which have been started but not yet submitted to a university or college.

Enrolled: you have been recorded as registered with a university or college.

Firm offer: the offer that you have accepted.

Institution: a university or college offering higher education programmes.

Personal ID: a 10-digit individual number assigned to you when you register to use Apply. It is printed on the Welcome letter we send you and is displayed in the format 123-456-7890. You will be asked to quote this number if you contact our Customer Service Unit.

Submitted applications: A full list of applications which have been sent to your chosen universities/colleges.

Unconditional offer: an offer given to you by a university or college if you have satisfied the criteria and can be accepted on the programme.

Unistats: a website for students who want to research and compare subjects and universities before deciding where to apply. You can also look at student satisfaction ratings. Visit the Unistats website.

Unsuccessful: you have not been accepted by the university or college concerned. A reason may be given by the university or college.

Withdrawal: you have cancelled an application before a decision on it has been made.
